Don’t Gaslight Me – I Know What I Was Taught in...

Blogger Abby Maxwell Hansen writes, "I’m the product of the LDS Young Women’s program of the 1990s. If there’s one thing I can personally claim expertise on, it’s what women and girls in my generation were told we should do with their lives. It was extraordinarily clear. We were supposed to get married as soon as possible after high school, have lots of babies, and stay at home with those children. Planning for a career or choosing to work outside of the home for any reason other than a complete emergency would be Satan’s plan for my life, not...

Lost in the Temple

I have a recurring dream/nightmare where I’m lost in the temple. These dreams started several years before I went through the temple for my endowment and then continued after.

…if i were bishop?

I bet readers of this blog would largely agree that if someone has to be told they're special in an organization it's likely because they are not being treated special. The boys know they're special: they get the priesthood. The girls have to have regular little speeches to be told they're special: because nothing else tells them they're special.

The LDS Church ignores women’s suffering when it comes to garments

"This isn’t a problem you can solve with quantitative data alone. Understanding and improving garment wearing for women requires a deeper understanding of the embodied religious experiences of women and the ways in which garments shape those experiences in positive and negative ways."

Garments never reminded me of Jesus

In the 15 years that I wore garments I never once thought of them as a symbol of Jesus.

LDS Mother’s Rooms for Nursing Moms Suck

"I wanted to show what a typical mother’s room looks like in a church building in 2024, but it was very hard to find images online anywhere. (Apparently, our mother's rooms are not worth bragging about on the internet.) So after dropping my kids at school one morning, I headed on a whim to the local stake center and made this video of myself touring a problematic mother's room."

We Need You (But Why?)

“We need you; We love you.” – President Camille N. Johnson While plenty has been well said about the recent Relief Society Devotional, I found myself curious about this perennial phrasing President Johnson used to open the devotional. She addressed 18 year old people coming into Relief Society, but to my perspective, it seems like women are always being told we’re needed in this church. Who is saying "we need you?" Who is being told they are needed? Thanks to the General Conference corpus, I learned that in General Conference talks only, usage of the phrase “we need you” has...

Can women do that??

Sarah Bessey writes in Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible's View of Women: “I’m through wasting my time with debates about women-should-do-this and women-should-not-do-this boundaries. I’m out. What an adventure in missing the point."

Responding to the Church’s Instagram Snafu

"So yes, this statement is laughable at best and thousands of women are being vocal about it, as they should be. It's insulting and it's completely false. Especially since the church just made $192,000,000 purchase from a church with a female prophet."

Letting Him Prevail

"I knew what mattered most to me- in a world of “good, better, best” I felt very guided by the Lord that building my life around my family would be the best thing for me and that following His guidance would bring me true joy. "
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
