Our Bloggers Recommend: Why the LDS Church’s top women’s leaders are...

Exponent bloggers April Young-Bennett, Katie Ludlow Rich, Lindsay Ott Denton ("ElleK" on the blog) and Abby Maxwell Hansen share their thoughts in this Salt Lake Tribune article by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Peggy Fletcher Stack. Did you know that top female leaders in the church no longer meet separately with the first presidency or an apostle on a regular basis? (Instead, they sit on an "executive council" where they are outnumbered by men, a change that occurred in 2015 in the wake of the Ordain Women movement.) What are your thoughts on Peggy's reporting?

The Nine Women General Auxiliary Leaders

There has been a lot of discussion about the 2024 Worldwide Relief Society Devotional held three weeks ago. I hope that the conversations around power and authority triggered by the infamous Instagram post will lead to change.  As flawed as some of the messaging was, I would like to highlight something positive I saw in the devotional. At the beginning of the video presentation, I found the presence and portrayal of the nine women general auxiliary leaders standing closely together striking.  Speaking as a unit, I saw a quorum of powerful women portrayed in a way that I had not...

We love Jesus We wait for Jesus We have faith in Jesus But when there’s faith, there’s doubt. Faith isn’t perfect knowledge. I’m scared I’m worried I feel betrayed

Responding to the Church’s Instagram Snafu

"So yes, this statement is laughable at best and thousands of women are being vocal about it, as they should be. It's insulting and it's completely false. Especially since the church just made $192,000,000 purchase from a church with a female prophet."

Guest Post: Honoring Music Contributed by Relief Society Sisters for the...

The Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is celebrating its 182nd anniversary this year. As ward music leader, I am selecting hymns to honor the important contributions of members of the Relief Society to the church. I have cultivated a program that features text and/or music created by Latter-Day Saint women.

Guest Post: Dear Priesthood Leader

For many women, including ourselves, it is painful, difficult, and disappointing that it is within the church – where pure doctrine reflects women and men’s equality – that we see, feel, and experience the most inequity. When we operate in our work and academic institutions or within our homes, we are respectfully regarded as whole people. It is only at church that there are limitations placed upon us because of our gender. Our voices, personal revelation, and God-given gifts are underutilized and siloed.

Deconstructing Faith and Body Issues One Truth at a Time

The dress was white with blue flowers. It was a simple long shift dress in standard late nineties fashion, with a slight cling and wide tank top like straps. When I tried it on and looked in the mirror of the dressing room, I cried. My stomach was rounded instead of flat and I crumpled under waves of self-loathing.

Women’s Lamentations

How can women be full partners when men will not promote them from associates? How can women organize when men must authorize every action? How can women inspire when they are crushed by patriarchy?

Creating Belonging in a New Ward

How would you go about creating a ward culture that is loving, inclusive, and charitable?
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
