Guest Post: Stewards and Kings

By Anonymous Once, not terribly long ago, I was reading through the story of Alma and Abinadai. Mosiah 18:13 & 18 stuck out to me: 13 And when had said these words, the Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he said: Helam, I baptize thee, having authority from the Almighty God, as a testimony that ye have entered into a covenant to serve him until you are dead as to the mortal body; and may the Spirit of the Lord be poured out upon you; and may he grant unto you eternal life, through the redemption of Christ, whom he has prepared from...

Guest Post: Liberation Through Obedience

by Blaire Ostler You might find yourself scoffing at the title of this post, but hear me out. For me, obedience in my religion is quite liberating, especially as a woman. Here’s why. God gave us the greatest commandment through Jesus Christ. The greatest commandment is to love God and love each other. All other commandments hinge on this commandment. If any other command or request conflicts with the first commandment of thou shalt love, it should be reworked, reimagined, or discarded. No other command can supersede God’s ultimate commandment to love. Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus...

When I Suffered Alone: A #MormonMeToo Post about a Bishop Who...

I found photos on our home computer one night when I was searching for some pictures of the kids--they showed my husband and another woman on vacation together, clearly enjoying themselves. That night he confessed that he'd met up with her several times for professional conferences and he begged for forgiveness, ensuring me that he would never let it happen again. I believed him because of the sincerity of his forgiveness, but of course I insisted that he confess to the Bishop so he could make things right with God. It was then that an already-awful experience became even worse...

A Public Service Announcement for Bishops and Stake Presidents

Dear Bishops and Stake Presidents, You’re just trying to help. (I think.) You don’t want to push people out of the church. (I hope.) Maybe you haven’t even realized that your well-intentioned efforts at soul-saving are going awry. It’s understandable. You’re just following the Handbook. If you’ve never had the uncomfortable experience of having opinions that clash with those accepted by most Mormons, it may be hard to empathize with people who do. And if you have never experienced doubt, how can you possibly know good techniques for managing a faith crisis? I have insider information that may be useful to...

Can Mormon women count money?

Of course we can! But here is another question: Do LDS Church policy makers know that Mormon women can count money? Based on church financial policies, it does not appear that they do.

What Two Little Jewish Girls Taught Me about Being a Mormon...

I used to teach piano lessons in my house. Every day after school, I had five to six kids coming in and out. These kids were great—thoughtful, well-behaved, if not the most diligent at practicing the piano. In the month of December, we always did a Christmas recital. After all, the majority of my students came from my LDS network, and once my oldest started a Church of Christ preschool, I thought it was still a safe bet that everyone was Christian. In November, we began picking our music, and I gave two sisters who were also relatively new students their...

Come Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 20–22 “The Rise of the...

What are my responsibilities in the work of the priesthood? In 2014, the Young Women lesson plan, What are my responsibilities in the work of the priesthood? replaced the 2013 lesson plan, What are the duties of priesthood holders? I was excited about this change. The new focus is much more uplifting for Young Women than spending the hour talking about the roles only their male counterparts play and makes it a little easier to follow the sensitivity recommendations in this Young Women lesson about priesthood and in this Young Women Lesson about priesthood.  (Still, I recommend that Young Women leaders go over...

How do women currently exercise the priesthood? (Est-ce que les femmes...

**Click for French Translation/Traduction en français   General Relief Society President Linda K. Burton has encouraged women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) to learn more about the priesthood.  In this spirit, I have been studying speeches by currently serving apostles, auxiliary leaders and recent emeritus auxiliary leaders to search for answers to common questions about present-day doctrines surrounding women and priesthood.  Excerpts are included below, organized by the question they may address. We rejoice that we are privileged to live in this season of the history of the Church when questions are being asked about the...

Confirming Our Hope: Women and Priesthood

Earlier this month, I presented at Counterpoint Conference on the topic, Theological Foundations: What Is Priesthood And Why Is It Necessary For Women?   Here is my presentation.  YouTube Version Prezi Version (No narration, but crystal clear viewing of graphics and text) Full Text In Doctrine and Covenants 128, Joseph Smith expressed his joy in the restoration of the priesthood, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little, confirming his hope. 1  Within the church he established, women are still hoping that the priesthood will be restored to us.  Does Mormon theology confirm our hope? The Bible describes four female prophets:...

Requests To Meet With Local Leaders

During the weeks preceding and following the recent Ordain Women action,  several Mormon feminists, including me, were contacted by our stake presidents or bishops. These local leaders requested meetings with us to discuss our concerns about male-only priesthood.  To my knowledge, most of these meetings resulted in good conversations.  I hope this is an indication that the Church intends to honor the statement its spokesperson made at the event, "These are our sisters and we want them among us."
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
