Come Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 84 “The Power of Godliness”

What is the Priesthood? For much of my life when I've had a lesson on the priesthood in Sunday School or Young Women's, I've thought, "Well, no use listening to this. I'm not allowed to have the priesthood."  It can be challenging to find ways for girls to engage in this subject. They may be apathetic at best or hurt and angry. April posted some excellent ways to foster discussion in her YW's lesson earlier this month. I would also add that in these lessons it is important to get women's teachings in here as much as possible. I have questions...

Come Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 121–123 “O God, Where Art...

How to be Sensitive to Young Women when Teaching about the Priesthood In 2013, the entire month of June was devoted to lessons about the priesthood. The introduction to this priesthood section of the 2013 Young Women curriculum contained this note: Be sensitive to young women who live without priesthood authority in the home or have negative examples in their lives. By all means, do be sensitive to such situations, but I wonder why it did not occur to the authors to remind teachers to be sensitive to the fact that all of the students in the class are young women and...

Question Authority

By Jana (Based on a post from my soloblog) This weekend I scraped off the tattered bumper stickers from our car (Another Family for Peace, Live Simply so Others May Simply Live, and Just Say YES to Equal Marriage Rights) and put on three new ones.  One of them, "Question Authority," was John's (my spouse's) first choice.  The others: a large peace symbol and "Consume Less, Share More" were more of my choosing. However I had a musing this morning that affirms the significance of the "Question Authority" slogan for me as I had a strong flashback of something that happened many...

What is it about that temple recommend interview?

It’s been six years since I last had that interview. Ever since my difficult experience with the temple, I haven’t been able to bring myself to get a temple rec, even though I, in good peace of mind, could probably answer all the questions well enough to get one. There would be some tricky questions, of course. Particularly that one about living up to my temple covenants. How does a woman who absolutely rejects the idea of hearkening unto a husband get past that one? I think I would honestly respond that I’m not perfect but that I’m trying to...

Hidden Treasure in a Bookstore

Browsing in a bookstore, I happened across a book entitled The Feminine Face of God. I was drawn to it and opened it up. Inside, I found a treasure that I cannot keep to myself. A Jewish woman, Sherry Ruth Anderson, recounts a powerful dream she had. It’s a little long, the full version of the dream is here In the dream, she describes entering a temple, where she meets Melchizedek. In the temple she finds a special Torah: I am dumbfounded by what I see. Rolled onto finely carved wooden poles is the most sacred object in Judaism, the Torah....
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
