Sacred Music Sunday: As Sisters in Zion

I've spent most of my adult life in the church serving in Primary, interspersed by only a few brief stints in Relief Society. A few weeks ago, I was released from my calling as a Primary teacher, so I've been attending Relief Society again for the first time in years. I was a bit hesitant because I don't believe in segregation, including segregation by sex or gender. I contemplated ditching out after sacrament meeting but decided to give it a fair chance anyway. This week was marvelous. There have been several tragedies in my ward over the last few weeks,...

Why Do We Only Talk About Men in Relief Society Facebook...

Last month I wrote a blog post about the number of men speaking at Relief Society conferences and events compared to women, despite the Relief Society being a women's organization. The day after that posted I checked my email and saw a message from my ward Relief Society presidency, encouraging us to read a talk by Elder Gong (a man) before we study it together on Sunday in class. This got me thinking, and I searched for other unread messages from her. Sure enough, two weeks before that was another email encouraging me to read another talk by another man...

Relief Society Speakers Compared to Other Women’s Organization Speakers – Visuals...

I officially belong to two female organizations - the Relief Society (for over two decades), and Girl Scouts of America (where I have been a leader for 7 years). Neither organization is perfect, but both have brought great experiences and friendships into my life. A couple months ago, I received a package with m'n'ms, microwave popcorn, and a drink mix along with this announcement for a stake relief society event: It's a cute flyer for an online broadcast to watch at home during covid, and the movie snacks to eat while watching it are a really nice touch. It's honestly a...

Come Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 84 “The Power of Godliness”

The Spirit Gives Light to Everyone As you read these verses, note the contrast between light and darkness in these verses and consider the meaning of this metaphor: And I now give unto you a commandment to beware concerning yourselves, to give diligent heed to the words of eternal life. For you shall live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God. For the word of the Lord is truth, and whatsoever is truth is light, and whatsoever is light is Spirit, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ.D&C 84:43-45 What do you think of when you hear this metaphor about light? How...

Behold, Your Little Ones: A Woman’s Witness

I am the mother of young daughters. I do the majority of childcare and spend the most time with them. I witness their dreams, their struggles, their assumptions about how the world works. I witness what they believe they can and cannot do. I witness how they take in the church’s patriarchal structure, and how they desire to participate. My husband is a loving, involved father. He isn’t there see these desires to the same extent I am (and even if he was, it would be a different experience for him.) I thought about how rare it must be...

How Would Americans Feel if Their Elected Officials Were Picked the...

With all the mayhem in Washington DC happening right after a new senate and congress was seated (and with a new president set to be sworn in next week), I've been thinking a lot about how our female representation works in the church. Politics are crazy right now, but at least I know that the people representing my state in the federal government were chosen by the voice of the majority here, and that I was allowed to have a say in that.  On the other hand, when it comes to my church and relief society representation at high levels,...

Guest Post: My Relief Society’s Anti-Racism Discussion

By Nicole Sbitani The Relief Society mission statement declares that sisters in Zion “work in unity to help those in need.” The past few months have reminded me that there is much work for us to do, particularly in support of our Black siblings in the United States and around the world. Many white women have only just begun to realize how much racism is still hurting God’s children. They are  starting to recognize the harm they cause through their silence and complacency with white supremacy. And as a woman of color who is non-Black and of mixed-race, I have...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
