Gospel Principles 18: Faith in Jesus Christ

I envy the teacher who is assigned this lesson. Three principles are at the heart of Christianity: Faith, Hope, and Charity . . . and Jesus is at the center of all three. Anytime a lesson focuses on the Savior (and somehow, all lessons should), you open the space for healing in the classroom.  When I teach Relief Society, I assume there is at least one sister in the room who has come to class urgently, silently seeking some peace, some balm.  If I keep that in mind, it helps me find the right tone. I. What is faith? It’s always...

Gospel Principles 17: The Church of Jesus Christ Today

by Kelly Ann “Chapter 17: The Church of Jesus Christ Today,” Gospel Principles, (2009),94–100 Note: Please feel free to add your thoughts, stories, or examples surrounding Chapter 17 in the comment section below, as these thoughts and questions (some taken from the manual itself) are not intended to be a full outline). The Church of Jesus Christ Was Taken from the Earth • Why was the Church of Jesus Christ removed from the earth shortly after the Savior’s death and Resurrection?  What do we mean when we use the phrase “the Great Apostasy?  How does that view differ from other religious traditions?  What...

Gospel Principles 16: The Church of Jesus Christ in Former Times

This is the outline that I would follow if I were teaching the lesson. I have a personal theory that every lesson is, at root, about at least one member of the Godhead. Some focus more on Christ, some focus more on Heavenly Father, and some focus more on the Holy Ghost. By my interpretation the star of this lesson is the Holy Ghost. Right out of the gate the manual points out that "True to His word, He continued to guide them from heaven. He sent the Holy Ghost to be a comforter and a revelator to them." The church...

Gospel Principles 15: The Lord’s Covenant People

by Kelly Ann For this lesson, I have made a list of questions (some taken from the lesson itself) to help stimulate thought prior to and potentially generated discussion in Relief Society.  I hope the teachers find this useful and will share further ideas below as this is not a comprehensive outline as is. “Chapter 15: The Lord’s Covenant People,” Gospel Principles, (2009),81–86 What is a covenant? Is there a difference between a covenant and a promise?  What does a covenant mean in terms of the gospel? Why does God make covenants with his children?  Does God make covenants with all of his children? ...

Gospel Principles 14: Priesthood Organization

One of our readers, Alyssa, emailed us her idea of how to approach this lesson. (Thank you, Alyssa!) She writes: When I've taught this lesson in the past, I usually do most of it straight---basically following the outline of the manual. Since I came from an all-girl family, I personally found most of the specific information about the roles and duties of each priesthood office to be rather eye-opening. I had never been taught that information very explicitly up until the time that I taught this lesson---which probably speaks a little bit to the gendered nature of instruction in the church....

Gospel Principles 13: The Priesthood

This lesson consists of four questions that the manual recommends assigning to small groups and have them answer the questions. That's a quick way to get the lesson done if someone is running short on time and could be effective. I've used these questions as general subjects and listed more questions with quotes that can help this lesson be a little more applicable to both genders. 1.  Why do we need the priesthood on the Earth? I would use this section to define the priesthood. What is the priesthood? D&C 84: 19-21 How do we use the priesthood?  (or, What ordinances do we have that...

Though I don’t know exactly how it all works, I take great comfort in the fact that when I am suffering at least one person understands how I feel.

Gospel Principles 11: The Life of Christ

by Kelly Ann Here are my thoughts on the various sections – mostly questions to lead class discussion as this topic is something people generally know more about.  I would focus on different sections and/or questions depending on the class as it is a lot of material.  I hope the teachers find this useful and please share your ideas below in the comment section. “Chapter 11: The Life of Christ,” Gospel Principles, (2009),50–58 The Life of Christ Was Predicted Long before His Birth What are some of the prophecies about Jesus Christ?  (Isaiah 53:3–5, 7; Mosiah 3:5–8).  How do the prophecies differ between...

Gospel Principles 10: Scriptures

As I prepared this lesson, I feel like the first few sections will be pretty quick discussions unless you have a ward full of brand-spankin’ new converts who didn’t get taught about the four books of scripture during their missionary discussions.  Or maybe I’d just skip over them because I think it’s all kinds of fun to talk exegesis, i.e. biblical interpretation.  My thoughts are in italics, more official sources are presented in regular font. I’d start this lesson with the hymn, “As I Search the Holy Scriptures” on pg 277—this alone could teach the lesson.   The Scriptures Are Available to...

Gospel Principles 9: Prophets of God

This lesson provides a wonderful opportunity to have an open and enlightening conversation about prophets. This is one of the most basic principles of the gospel, one that gets taught from the earliest days in Primary. That being said, the topic of prophets has a rich historical and theological background and can provide for a fascinating lesson. Instead of giving a lecture about who prophets are and what they do, I would open each topic for discussion by class participants. Prayerfully consider the questions provided in the lesson manual, where they can be expanded and how they might enrich...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
