As Fasting often gets tied to lessons about Tithing, I think this lesson provides a good opportunity to talk about Fasting in detail. I have supplemented my outline, which still relies heavily on the manual, with principles from a conference talk entitled Fasting with Power given in April 2009 by Shayne Bowen of the Seventy. As typical for all my outlines, I have focused on questions from the manual, the conference talk, or elsewhere to generate discussion. Most of the Sabbath lessons I’ve been to at Church focus on what we should not do on the Sabbath. This can create some tension in a classroom (or among family members) when people feel that different things detract from the Sabbath. Instead of making lists of what not to do, I think inviting the class to engage in a more positive discussion where people share what they do on the Sabbath that they find uplifting, fulfilling, and nourishing.

This lesson is particularly salient for me, as my oldest son turned 8 this summer and is preparing for baptism. My husband and I are having Baptism Prep classes with him using scriptures, videos, and stories to help him understand the importance of the the covenant he is making. With his friends getting baptized throughout the year, we've learned that he didn't always separate the baptism from the event of having friends and family who come visit and celebrate.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”
