Gospel Principles 28: Service

Is any topic more connected to the core of Christianity?  Think of the John 1:27: “Pure religion…is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” This lesson has 5 sections with a key thought question beneath each. How we can serve? Think about ways people have served you and your family members. Why the Savior wants us to serve others Why does the Lord want us to serve others? We receive blessings through service What blessings do we receive through service to others? Opportunities to serve  How can we give enough time to...

Gospel Principles #27: Work and Personal Responsibility

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. —Colossians 3:23-24

Gospel Principles #26: Sacrifice

Guest Post by Vada I have cut out some parts of the lesson that I probably wouldn’t use or focus on – you should look at your manual for the whole thing and add back in anything that seems particularly important to you.  Also, I have included quotes from General Authorities throughout the lesson.  It might be nice to print these out and hand them out to people before the class, so they can read them aloud at the appropriate time and you can get more people involved in the lesson.  When I pose...

Gospel Principles #25: Fasting

by Kelly Ann As Fasting often gets tied to lessons about Tithing, I think this lesson provides a good opportunity to talk about Fasting in detail.  I have supplemented my outline, which still relies heavily on the manual, with principles from a conference talk entitled Fasting with Power given in April 2009 by Shayne Bowen of the Seventy.  As typical for all my outlines, I have focused on questions from the manual, the conference talk, or elsewhere to generate discussion.  Truthfully, there is too much here to incorporate into one lesson so would pick sections depending on the class. ---------------------------- What is...

Gospel Principles #24: The Sabbath

Most of the Sabbath lessons I’ve been to at Church focus on what we should not do on the Sabbath.  This can create some tension in a classroom (or among family members) when people feel that different things detract from the Sabbath.  Instead of making lists of what not to do, I think inviting the class to engage in a more positive discussion where people share what they do on the Sabbath that they find uplifting, fulfilling, and nourishing. As I usually do, I have put the topic headings from the manual in bold, direct quotes or summaries from the...

Gospel Principles #23: The Sacrament

by Kelly Ann For this lesson, I have prepared a list of questions to prime thought and discussion regarding the topic of the Sacrament.  However, I would like to strongly encourage reader's comments and ideas to supplement this post (as we don't have a full outline due to several circumstances).  Furthermore, as we need to make the new schedule for the rest of the gospel principles manual, if you would like to guest post a full outline next year, please email me at kalanierATgmail The Sacrament What is the significance of the Sacrament? What exactly are we remembering and what are we...

Gospel Principles #22: Gifts of the Spirit

I taught this lesson about a year ago, from the new manual for our Gospel Essentials class. I started out by sharing this personal story. Several years ago I had the fantastic opportunity to visit Paris with my older sister. I was fresh out of three years of High School French and was eager to try out the language. I was greatly disappointed when I found out that practically everyone in Paris speaks English. One day, however I was with my sister going through some touristy shops located near Notre Dame. We came to one that sold table linens and...

Gospel Principles 21: The Gift of the Holy Ghost

Guest Post by Aimee, co-editor of Exponent II Holy Ghost vs. Gift of the Holy Ghost I would start the lesson by asking the class what they think is the difference between experiencing the Holy Ghost and receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost.  How are these related? With the class you could consider the following passages from the manual: “A person may be temporarily guided by the Holy Ghost without receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost (see D&C 130:23). However, this guidance will not be continuous unless the person is baptized and receives the laying on of hands for the gift...

Gospel Principles 20: Baptism

This lesson is particularly salient for me, as my oldest son turned 8 this summer and is preparing for baptism. My husband and I are having Baptism Prep classes with him using scriptures, videos, and stories to help him understand the importance of the the covenant he is making. With his friends getting baptized throughout the year, we've learned that he didn't always separate the baptism from the event of having friends and family who come visit and celebrate. Intro: If I were teaching this lesson, I would start by talking about my son and our journey to prepare him for...

Come Follow Me: Alma 36–38 “Look to God and Live”

Repentance What is sin? The manual brings up the story of Alma the younger, which makes sense as it is THE scripture story about repentance. (write these questions on the board and discuss the answers) What were Alma's sins? He was actively trying to destroy the church of God, among other things. (see Alma 36:6) How did Alma learn he needed to repent? An angel appeared to him and struck him dumb, for three days. (see verse 6-10) How did Alma repent? While he was 'dumb' he went through the entire repentance process, and when he woke he was a...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
