Come Follow Me: Alma 13-16 “Enter Into The Rest of The...

This week’s lesson is the second half of the story of Alma and Amulek in Ammonihah. Part One is Chapters 8-12. Part Two is Chapters 13-16.  It’s impossible to cover every specific bit of theology brought up in this story in one lesson plan. So we are going to focus on two main topics here.  1. Zeezrom’s Conversion 2. Thoughts on the violence

Garments never reminded me of Jesus

In the 15 years that I wore garments I never once thought of them as a symbol of Jesus.

Sacred Music Sunday: All Glory, Laud, and Honor

Today is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, the last week of Christ's mortal ministry. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where he rode in on a donkey and was greeted with palm fronds and shouts of "Hosanna!". I wish we did better as a church in preparing for Easter. I've seen an improvement over the past several years (I haven't heard an Easter talk on food storage in over a decade, for example), but we still have a long way to go. I'm on my second stint as ward music chair, and I would have selected All...

Sacred Music Sunday: My Redeemer Lives

I recently got called as ward music chair for my second stint in the calling. It's a calling I really enjoy, and one of the things I like about it is the ability to expose the congregation to wonderful hymns that we don't seem to sing as often. One of those that I like is Hymn #135, My Redeemer Lives. It's nestled right in between I Believe in Christ and I Know that My Redeemer Lives, and in my opinion it's better than either of them. It's short, peppy, and upbeat. It doesn't drag or plod, and it captures...

How to Include People with Disabilities at Church

Disabled folks are extremely marginalized in the world today as they were in Biblical times, but Jesus shows us another way. We should follow His example.

Sunday Sermon: Four Marys

As I walked with these women, they led me to the feet of the Savior. The women of the Bible often come to know Jesus in quiet, humble ways—on their knees; seeking guidance and forgiveness; crying out in the darkness; serving others; and speaking up for what is right. Four women play an especial role in the Savior’s mission on Earth. They share a love and intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ. They also share a name: Mary.

Guest Post: The effect of another turning their cheek

Guest Post by Alma. Alma is a software developer and living her dream of being a stay-at-home mom to the three remaining children she has in her central Utah home. Her other interests include exploring the great variety of life while learning more of the woman she is, writing, and music. As part of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5 (3 Nephi 12), Jesus gives several examples of showing meekness, rather than the spirit of vengeance, in the face of injustice. 38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth...

Come Follow Me: Matthew 4; Luke 4–5 “The Spirit of the...

In Luke 4, we see three examples of Jesus Christ perfectly overcoming the temptation. We can learn from his example and seek to overcome temptations in the same way, but none of us will accomplish this perfectly like he did.

Apocalypse Later

(Alternate title - The End Is Not Nigh) I joined the church in the mid-1990s. Millennial fervor was high as the end of the century approached. I lived in Silicon Valley, so in addition to the church talk of the end of the world and the second coming, I also got the secular talk of Y2K and how the computer bug would spell the end of life as we know it. I didn't think that Jesus would return on exactly January 1, 2000, but I did think that He would return sometime in probably my young adulthood. My YW leaders and...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
