I Might’ve Been a Rocket Scientist (Like My Dad), But I...

"I would’ve loved the opportunity that LDS men seem to take for granted, which is the ability to have both a family and accomplishments, goals and ambitions outside of the home."

How Being An Only Child and Latter-day Saint Has Shaped Who...

Kirsten Harris is currently a college student at Boise State University. She was born and raised in eastern Idaho, grew up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and loves to travel! Having been an only child my entire life, I have become accustomed to many stereotypes. Additionally, being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints also comes with many stereotypes. Being both creates quite an interesting story.  I know some of you are thinking to yourself, how is she an only child? Don't members of that church have lots of children?...

“Stand Aside, Women.”

“I worshipped dead men for their strength, Forgetting I was strong.” Vita Sackville-West For Christmas last year, I planned a bubble ball party for my nieces and nephews. I scheduled my ward building’s gym months in advance. However, on the morning of the bubble ball party, I noticed that my event was no longer on the calendar. Luckily, there was nothing scheduled until 5:00 that evening. After an extensive setup, twelve kids were screaming and bouncing and rolling around the gym. However, after a few minutes, a group of men charged in, phones in hand.  “What are you doing here?” One man demanded. I...

The Priesthood Makes You Special

If it's wrong for girls to aspire to positions of church authority or to ask for the priesthood to be extended to them, why is it celebrated when boys do the exact same thing?

I’ll go where you want me to go

I have a memory of a Young Women’s lesson when I was about 16 years old where the teacher asked us to write down where we saw ourselves in 5 years. I wrote down things like college and a mission and whatever else my little 16 year old self thought I might do/start before age 21. I was surprised when we shared our plans and I realized I was the only girl my age who did not write “marriage” and “kids.” Most of those girls aspired to being stay at home moms. Sure, I wanted to be a mom...

Cub Scouts in 2023: A Snapshot

My three kids are all members of our local Cub Scout troop. There is no end to the irony of this fact. When the church and scouts officially parted ways in Spring 2018, I was dancing in the streets (not literally) for joy that I would not need to confront the dilemma of scouting simply because I happen to be a mother to boys in the LDS church. Scouting was the past and I was more than happy to move into my Scout free future. Alas, when my boys were in second grade, they asked to join their friends from...

Why I don’t Expect More Women to Speak at General Conference

Trudy’s post a few weeks ago, Hopes and Predictions for General Conference, sparked my own thoughts about General Conference. I share her hopes, along with many hopes listed in the comments. One thing I spent years hoping for and have had to let go is the hope for more women speakers.  To explain:  President Nelson has shown through his actions that he 1: does not view women as people and 2: is more concerned with giving individual men the pulpit at conference than he is about the needs of millions of women (and some men) who hunger for women's words.  1: President...

A Tale of Two Supreme Court Justices (and what a fast-approaching...

This man is next in line to be the head of the church, but it often feels to me like he doesn't recognize the humanity of women at all. The idea that we could have the same longing for success in a career path as a man doesn't seem to occur to him. When I look at him, I see a man amused by my silly feminine ambitions to have done more with my life than just help a man achieve his best life.

Guest Post: Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel

You can’t shame yourself into liberating the world.
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
