Guest Post: Why Heavenly Mother is Essential: Part 5

Guest Post by McArthur Krishna and Martin Pulido. McArthur comes from a pack of storytellers. And while the pack rightly insists she’s only in the running for third-best storyteller on a good day, she’s made her living in stories. Stories in words and visual art that inspire, demand, encourage and cajole us along this wild ride of life. If you know her, she will unabashedly tell your stories too (with some degree of truthiness). Look out. Martin is the co-author of the BYU Studies article, A Mother There: A Survey of Historical Teachings about Mother in Heaven This is the fifth...

Guest Post: These Are They Who Are of The Terrestrial

Guest Post by Nicole Sbitani. Nicole is an adult convert, a woman of color, and a professional diplomat. She blogs at nandm.sbitani.com and writes microfiction @nsbitani on Twitter. The content of this post does not represent the views of the U.S. Department of State or any other U.S. Government agency, department, or entity. Come Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 125-128: “A Voice of Gladness...

A Voice of Gladness In Doctrine and Covenants 128:19-23, we read from a September 1842 letter from Joseph Smith to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) some of the most joyous, exultant and downright perky verses in our canon: Now, what do we hear in the gospel which we have received? A voice of agladness! A voice of mercy from heaven; and a voice of btruth out of the earth; glad tidings for the dead; a voice of gladness for the living and the dead; glad tidings of great cjoy. How beautiful upon the mountains are the dfeet of those that bring glad...

Artist Spotlight: Tiare Terrill on Painting and Motherhood

Spotlight is a new feature on the Exponent II blog to shine light on individuals or projects in the world of Mormon Feminism outside of book reviews. In launching this feature, I knew I wanted to interview Tiare Terrill. She is an artist and mother of five based in the Dallas area who I had the privilege of meeting when I was in her ward for a short time. This is part one of her spotlight, about her experience of being called back to art after years of mothering young children. Part two, discussing her cover art for The...

Guest Post: I Love You, So I Say This, parts 17-19

Guest post by Anonymous. This Mama got a gay kid for Christmas in 2019. In March 2020 BYU signaled LGBTQ acceptance in an update to the Honor Code, and hastily retracted it. Feeling protective, this Mama wrote what she wished she could say to her Mormon family members. A week later, the first major COVID lockdowns started, and the BYU incident was pushed to the background. A year later, this personal appeal to the better angels is a plea in remembrance of that horrible week. There are 19 short pieces. This post is parts 17-19 of 19. Parts 1-4 Parts 5-8 Parts...

What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
