Self-Betrayal and Hawaiian Chicken Sandwiches

So, I invited the sister missionaries over to my house for dinner tonight. Let me rephrase that. I answered a call around lunch time and said yes to a desperate woman in the ward who had made 30 phone calls trying to find a place for the missionaries to eat that night. Having been in her shoes, I said yes. Dinner went well enough. I made Hawaiian chicken sandwiches (teriyaki marinated grilled chicken breasts, a slice of cheddar cheese, red onion, fresh spinach, and tomato with mayo on a toasted whole wheat bun) with sides of green beans and mac and cheese. No...

Domestic Goddess

When I married I wanted a well-outfitted kitchen like my Mom's. It needed things like springform pans, ramekins, and various sizes of cake pans. But number one on my list of 'mest-haves' was a KitchenAid mixer. I was quite sure that every good Mormon woman had one of those in her kitchen. I knew it could mix up a batch of cookies or brownies in a breeze, not to mention the ubiquitous attachments that would allow wheat (and meat) grinding, pasta rolling, bread kneading, and even ice cream making! So even though I wanted one of...

Exponent II Classics: Mormon Soul Food

Mormon Soul FoodAuthor Unknown*Vol. 28, No. 2*We received this wonderful look at Mormon cooking with no identifying contact information. After some time, we decided to publish it anyway in the hopes that its author will identify herself so she may be properly credited.—Exponent II editorsFor many, the mention of women and the Mormon Church in the same breath brings up issues having to do with motherhood, authority, and gender roles. But I think of casseroles and ward cookbooks. In our modern era of Enrichment rather than Homemaking, I know I ought not. But this is the world I...

Three Haikus for Thanksgiving

Nothing too weighty here. A little literary jello, a taste of the chiffon pie of poetry. Enjoy! Then go take a nap. Turkey People in the know Say you are dumb and ugly. But, oh, those drumsticks. I tried to flesh out (so to speak) the personality of turkeys for a story I was working on for children. My friends who’d raised turkeys said there is little to love about them. They are mean, noisy, messy, and dumb enough to drown themselves by opening their mouths in rainstorms. Cartoon and animated turkeys always look so fun and charming. It’s hard to have one’s expectations...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
