Coke or Pepsi?

Just because I'm curious, what's your favorite source of caffeine?  Or do you drink it at all?  My favorite is Coke Zero, which I'm not proud to admit I drink in greater volume than water some days.  I gave it up for Lent last year, and it was hard. Every. single. day.  I tried it again this year and after one day I couldn't remember how I benefitted from doing  it last time, other than proving it to myself that I could.  So I thought well, I climbed that mountain and once was enough.  And bought myself a Coke.

Relief Society Lesson 19: Temporal and Spiritual Blessings from the Word...

When I was young, I was often frustrated that one of the only things my peers knew about our faith concerned the negative aspects of the Word of Wisdom. They had a good grasp of the things that we don't do, without having the same grasp of the positive things that we do do and believe. Many years later, and many, many states away from my Oregon homeland, I found myself on the East Coast for grad school. I am still not certain if more people smoke and drink there, or if I was just more aware of it, but...

Family Dinner

Freedom from Want, by Norman Rockwell My extended family loves to tell stories. We sit around late into the night telling and retelling the same stories every time we get together. It is my favorite thing in the world. On this special occasion I thought I’d share one with you. It belongs to my father, but resides deep in my heart. My dad comes from a family of nine kids—six boys and three girls. It is a Norman Rockwell-esque type family. The kind that you can envision in any brightly colored Americana painting, where the adults resemble heroes--big, handsome, and strong--...

Poll: Obeying the Word of Wisdom

I think D&C Section 89 has some beautiful parts in it, and the promises in it are some of my favorite in the scriptures (finding wisdom and great treasures of knowledge through a proper diet?  Sign me up!).  So, I'm always a little bummed when the Word of Wisdom lesson in Sunday School becomes a rigid definition of what all true Mormons can and cannot consume. And, yet, I wonder how different people interpret the Word of Wisdom.  Caffeine or no caffeine?  Is a "very little meat" outdated or ring true?  Has the Word of Wisdom guided you to find...

Foods that are the same

A few years ago I delivered a meal of Cornish Pasties to a woman in my ward who just had a baby. A few weeks later she sent me a note thanking me for the homemade Empanadas. I had never had an empanada before and wasn't sure what it was so I looked it up. Sure enough, what I had made for her were in fact empanadas. This got me thinking that, even though foods from different parts of the world can be wildly different, they are very often quite similar. So I started making a list of food...

On Fat Acceptance

It remains a radical act to be a fat and happy woman in America. If you're fat, you're not only meant to be unhappy, but deeply ashamed of yourself, projecting at all times an apologetic nature, indicative of your everlasting remorse for having wrought your monstrous self upon the world. You are certainly not meant to be bold, or assertive, or confident—and should you manage to overcome the constant drumbeat of messages that you are ugly and unsexy and have earned equally society's disdain and your own self-hatred, should you forget your place and walk into the world one...

“Do You Hear What I Hear?”

One of my most cherished childhood memories is making plates of holiday treats.  Every year my mother would emerge from the pantry, arms overflowing with typical ingredients like flour, sugar, chocolate chips, and other holiday only items like those little gold dragees that we used to top the sugar cookie Christmas trees . Just as essential as to the baking process were the stack of 33s stored in the credenza next to the nativity set. I loved those Christmas albums.  Some we bought but most were handed out in November at the gas station when you got your tank filled. ...

Real Investment

For my birthday this weekend my husband and I went to a fancy French restaurant in a nearby historic town. We noshed on decadent food and pretended to live an indulgent life. It was a blast. However, nothing could be further from the truth. We are both graduate students living off University stipends. We rent a small apartment near campus, have hot pockets in our freezer, and wear thrift store finds-- quintessential signs of eternal students. In fact, we live such an inexpensive life that I am often embarrassed when a birthday, anniversary, Valentine's Day, or graduation day rolls...

It all boils off anyways, right?

Several years ago my mom was having a problem with slugs. So she asked her friend for a can of beer to use to kill the slugs with.* That can of beer sat untouched in my mom's kitchen for at least 3 years. The slug problem was apparently bad enough to ask for the beer, but not bad enough to actually use it. I don't know exactly what happened to the beer, but it quietly disappeared. I suspect she gave it back to her friend, and I hope they both had a good laugh about it. Cooking and baking...

food, flesh and spirit

by G This is going to be a little sensitive to talk about, but it's been on my mind lately so here goes. I used to have some serious issues with my body and with food. For most of my teens and 20s I was pinging back and forth between thin and thick, either starving or stuffed, but never satisfied. And my mind was utterly and completely preoccupied with it all; what I was eating, what I wasn't and how it translated on my hips and tummy. (It took a good chunk of brain space for all that...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
