Guest Post: A Nonverbal Communication Faith Transition: A Felled Tree #ReconstructingFaith

Guest post by Amy. Human Being. Mother of Two. Deep Thinker. Granddaughter of a Philosopher. My faith transition came out of the middle of nowhere—like that fluke strong gust of wind that manages to knock down a tree that hits you before you see it coming. It wasn't historical (no new doctrines or interpretations at play), and no one "offended" me in the terms of culture (no more than usual anyway). I remember being at my computer, buried in technical terms and 10-20 web links up about “Non-Verbal Learning Disorder,” a specific, clinical term describing the strengths and weaknesses of living...

Come Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 71-75: “No Weapon That Is...

When Church Experiences Are Less Than Ideal An 1831 mission to Missouri did not go as expected. A large team of missionaries, including Joseph Smith, Signey Rigdon, Ezra Booth, Edward Partridge, Isaac Morley, and Reynolds Cahoon, among others, traveled from Kirtland, Ohio to Independance, Missouri in June 1831. The missionaries had big expectations for this mission. The pairs of missionaries departed for Missouri with high hopes. They believed the day of Jesus’s return to earth was very near and that they were traveling to locate and build a temple city in which they would gather to receive the Lord when He came....

Come Follow Me: Alma 53-63 “Preserved by His Marvelous Power”

Speaking Truth(?) to Power The chapters included in this lesson all take place during a time of war between the Nephites and the Lamanites.  This  is a high-stress situation where the stakes are high—literally, life and death. In such challenging situations, we see people at their best and worst. What can we learn from what Nephite leaders did right and wrong in these stressful circumstances? Moroni Communicates with the Enemy In Alma 54, a Lamanite leader, Ammoron, proposes a prisoner exchange and Moroni, a Nephite leader, is thrilled. (In Alma 54:2, the text says he "felt to rejoice exceedingly at the request.") Moroni's...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
