Virtual Oases

Both the original Women's Exponent and Exponent II were conceived as forums for women's voices. As the internet has provided a plethora of watering-holes for LDS women, it seems in keeping with Exponent's mission to highlight women's voices in the blogs and link to stories of LDS women in the news. Each weekend, we'll post a round-up of voices we found compelling. Enjoy some lazy weekend browsing! Mormon Women In the News Historian (and Exponent woman!) In(ter)dependence Day

As a child, I was fascinated and repelled by the game Mousetrap … the outcome so dependent on every little piece working perfectly in and of itself, and in concert with all the other little pieces. In my collegiate days, dependence used to be a dirty word. I hated relying on others, and delegation was as painful as a root canal. If I had to work on a group project, I always took the assignment that required the least amount of collaboration. Monster in Our Midst

by Cynthia Thorley Andreason(Originally published in the Winter 1980 issue of Exponent II. For length purposes, we have shortened the article slightly. A link to the original full version of the article will be available shortly.)After long hours of consideration and investigation, I have decided that we are living with a monster in our midst…Who is this dragon, and where did it come from? I call it “The-Way-Things-Are-Supposed-To-Be,” and I think that we’ve collectively given birth to it over many years. As a teenager, I was fiercely determined not to be like all those other girls who were snagging...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
