Eddies of light twirl in silence when a star passes between us.

Mary does her work. Joseph keeps his word. Jesus comes against odds.

Daybreak moves through dust-laden air, but we’re not there to see the stable,

or feel the straw. We’ve made our way to a time and place where nothing

magic seems to happen anymore. Caught in the current, we are swaddled

in mystery. [But we were before the stars.] We are the sound of water

.

beneath grass on a hillside where shepherds watch their flocks.

We are eddies of redemption flowing around sand and rocks,

down the Kidron, to a basin where Jesus washes feet.

We are clouds and thunder, a prayer in the rent sky.

We are the noise in darkened heavens, each her own lullaby,

while the baby sheds His tears, cries midnight out of this world.

  1. “For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of Melody.” [Isaiah 51:3] Last week I told Twila and Syl that I suspected Isaiah was talking about you. I’m going to point them to this post as further proof.

    1. Well, that’s one of the best Christmas presents I’ve ever received! Thanks, Jon, for your faith and for your kind words. God bless you.

I thirst and hunger for Something else, for Someone else. My Heavenly Mother? And so I pause. I meditate. I wonder what it means to also be connected to a Divine being that is female.
I've often said that the only calling in the church I would turn down is Primary chorister. Getting up and entertaining children for an extended period of time is so far outside my skill set and comfort zone that it would be miserable to me, even though I like music and I like children. This summer I've had the opportunity to put that to the test by being the go-to substitute for the Primary chorister.
