Guest Post: My Husband Is the Nurturer

By Bryn The October 2018 Women's Session of General Conference certainly electrified me (not in a good way). As I went from deep unease to shaking a bit and wanting to cry, I'm not sure I can explain fully why I felt such a deep sense of wrongness as my being was continuously described to me as a natural nurturer, but I know it has something to do with my husband, the nurturer, who happened to be sitting right next to me during the session. I married a man who was raised, at least for a time, by his single father....

Guest Post: Equal Partners or Preside Over — Pick One

By Florence It all started when the visiting General Authority opened up the small group meeting for questions. My heart started beating a little faster and a little harder. I knew I had to ask. In a gentle, deliberately non-confrontational voice I questioned, “Is the Church's policy to not ordain women to offices in the Priesthood doctrinal or an administrative choice? And, if not administrative, what is the doctrinal basis?” How was I to know that two simple and sincere questions would lead me to calling out the Church on their use of the phrase “preside over” in The Family: A Proclamation...

Guest Post: The New CHI and Priesthood in the Home

by Jesse I had heard rumors that parts of the Church Handbook of Instructions were online, so I peeked in at lds.org.  The rumors are true.  Handbook 2, which is distributed to priesthood and auxilliary leaders is fully searchable (and meant to be read: see the end of paragraph 9).  Handbook 1, which is intended for Bishops and Stake Presidencies is not available. With a slight sense of dabbling in the forbidden, I began reading.  I stopped when I got to section 2.3 The Priesthood and the Family.  The wording of the second sentence startled me*.  It brings the equality of men and women...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
