I don’t remember who told me first — my mom? My dad? My Young Women’s President, the one with the indestructible, gravity-defying, blonde hair? Whoever it was, here is what they told me: say yes to boys. If a boy asks you to slow dance, you say yes. It doesn’t matter if his list of hobbies begins and ends with Rubik’s Cube or if he’s wearing a Star Wars tie or if the DJ is playing “Say Something” by A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera or if you’re feeling like your glitter cat eyeliner is a little too cool […]
CHAPTER ONE1 In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. The Father was God, and so was the Mother. And they saw that it was good.2 And the Father said, Let us make a man in my image, in my likeness.3 So the Father created a man in his own image, in the image of the Father created he him. And the Father called him Adam, because he was made from the dust of the earth.4 And the Father said, it is not good that man should be alone.5 And the Mother said, I will make a help […]
The eight-year-old, newly baptized takes the blessed bit of bread from the silver tray in her brother’s hand glances at her father who is always on the stand And whispers to her mother “When I’m twelve I’ll get to pass the sacrament, won’t I?” “Shhhhh!” The voice of her ten-year-old brother in a loud whisper across their mother’s folded arms: “No!” “Why?” “Shhhhh!” “’Cuse you’re a gurrl!” The eight-year-old’s mind full of every Harry Potter book half of Louisa May Alcott and many other worthy friends speaks silently: “Maybe when I’m thirteen.” The voice of her sixteen-year-old brother who kneels […]
Table of ContentsOvercome spiritual risk aversion. Refer to Her. Connect with Her. Redefine “God.” Find Her in scripture. Amplify female voices. Acknowledge the shoulders we stand on. Facilitate and advocate for ongoing work. Explore Her roles. Celebrate womanhood outside of motherhood. I recently purchased a children’s story at Deseret Book called Heavenly Parents. On the first page, it reads “Heavenly Father” with a drawing of Heavenly Father. On the next page, it reads “Heavenly Mother” with a drawing of Heavenly Mother and Heavenly Father, as if Her standing alone threatened the sovereignty of a male God.Doctrinal and systemic tokenization of Heavenly Mother is evident not just in some childrens’ book […]
His eyelashes. They were the only part of his bashed-up face that I recognized. Careful to avoid the IVs, I reached for his hand. It was still as warm as it had been two nights before, at a friend’s wedding at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. We’d sneaked out of the reception into the gardens. The velvety moonlight made every leaf luminous. The delicate breeze carried the warm scent of flowers. When he kissed me, a flower he’d tucked into my hair fell onto the grass. It was the most romantic moment of my life.My fiancé was in a coma after the […]
What parts of your childhood/young adult life led you to illustration? I was drawing people as early as three years old. I’d create stories with the people I drew and my Tatay (dad) was always eager to hear what new adventures I had imagined. Tatay was always supportive of my artistic endeavours. I thought his support was simply that of a parent supporting their child. However, when I graduated with my BFA he wrote me a note telling me that I was “a realization of a failed dream.” That was the first time I learned that he had been accepted to […]
