General Conference Talks…Again?

The High Council speaker stood up one Sunday in May and began reading from his notes on General Conference. I immediately thought: "And so it begins." I'm not sure when LDS church leaders decided to encourage speakers and teachers to regurgitate General Conference talks for the six months between General Conferences. It clearly follows the LDS Church's love of correlation, uniformity, and sameness. This can be very comforting and uplifting for some. Unfortunately, it's also problematic. Here's why: It's Often Like Listening to a Teacher Read Aloud From a Textbook. One of the biggest complaints I hear from students about teachers...

Relief Society Speakers Compared to Other Women’s Organization Speakers – Visuals...

I officially belong to two female organizations - the Relief Society (for over two decades), and Girl Scouts of America (where I have been a leader for 7 years). Neither organization is perfect, but both have brought great experiences and friendships into my life. A couple months ago, I received a package with m'n'ms, microwave popcorn, and a drink mix along with this announcement for a stake relief society event: It's a cute flyer for an online broadcast to watch at home during covid, and the movie snacks to eat while watching it are a really nice touch. Poll: The Quaint Tradition of Sacrament Talk Gender Order

In Caroline’s post, Empowering Women on the Ward Level, she made several practical suggestions that bishops could implement in their own wards to promote gender equity within the parameters of current church policies.  One of these suggestions was to alternate the gender of the final speaker at Sacrament meeting. My current ward almost always begins Sacrament meeting with a youth speaker, places a female speaker in the middle of the agenda, and finishes the meeting with a male speaker.  This consistent pattern implies a spiritual hierarchy to me: inexperienced youth first, moderately accomplished women next, and glorious priesthood bearers as...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
