Exponent II was a bright light in my life during a period of transition as our family settled into Boston in 1977. The brilliant women, stimulating conversations, and service opportunities broadened my mind and increased my capacities. Exponent II has a valuable role to play in posing questions, validating outliers, and nudging Church boundaries. Not only do I have that first issue — I have every issue published since July 1974.
Helping to produce Exponent II, I realized that — for the first time — I felt safe to explore my own thinking and instincts and to trust myself.
Like me, that first issue shows its age, and I turn its yellowed pages gingerly, careful to not cause any more tears along the folds.
We raised our families together while shepherding what we felt was an honest, intelligent representation of what Mormon women were dealing with and thinking . . .
I think a DNA blood sample would verify my connection to it.
I hate to think what I would have missed in my life had I never encountered Exponent.
I am struck by the fact that it has also always been bold, clear in its purpose, and confident in its mission.
For me, the retreat succeeds because of principles laid out during Friday night introductions, as conceived by Carrel Sheldon.
Exponent II provides feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.
