Advice from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

I had the pleasure of meeting Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Exponent II co-founder Laurel Thatcher Ulrich last night.  She is promoting her new book, A House Full of Females. She spoke to a full house and the books she had on hand sold out before I could get one! I asked Laurel if she had any advice for younger Mormon feminists and this is what she said: "People often ask me how I managed to raise five children and develop an academic career.  I sometimes say 'a little at a time.'  I married when I was twenty so by the time I completed...

Like Birds on a Wire: Making Connections through Social Media*

by Jana The Exponent recently joined the ranks of Twitter users.  Please follow us to keep apprised of  weblinks and blogposts that are relevant to the world of Mormon women. I became an avid user of social media after the success of my birthday fundraiser last spring, when I raised over a thousand dollars to buy prosthetic limbs for a teenage amputee.  Since joining Facebook I've 'friended' grade-school friends, former ward members, and colleagues from all walks of my life.  I love 'connecting' with such a large group of vibrant and fascinating people!  Social media has also influenced my professional life...

Making History

A few weeks ago I recorded an interview with Exponent II founder Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. She read some passages from her latest book, Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History and she answered my questions about historical writing and research. You can listen to the first and second segment of our chat via the Making History Podcast. In her book, Laurel writes of her contributions to Mormon women's history: "My friends and I called our feminist newspaper Exponent II to honor a nineteenth-century pro-suffrage periodical launched by Mormon women in Utah in 1872. Most of us had grown up knowing about...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
