The Tree of Life

When Jesus was sorrowful, and very heavy, He cried, Mommy. She came unto Him from heaven, strengthening Him. Even after they parted, She tarried with Him, and watched; His friends could not stay awake one hour. When Jesus was on the cross, His Father might have been in the farthest reaches of heaven, for sorrow, and solace. His Mother might have been right there, the Tree of Life, branches holding Him– a weeping willow.

Easter 2015: a Look at Past Easter Posts on The Exponent

This week, I was feeling sad that I don't get to be with my ward on Easter Sunday. I'm sure General Conference will be lovely this weekend, but I'm always a little sad on those years when Easter and General Conference converge. Knowing that I wouldn't get to hear an Easter talk from a member of the ward. I turned to my other beloved Mormon community here at The Exponent and came across so many pieces that have spiritually fed me during past Easter seasons. Easter Posts The Easter Basket by Mraynes: "I went home and pulled out my own Easter...

Too old to hunt eggs?

When I was single and 21, I attended a memorable family Easter egg hunt. I am the oldest female cousin on that side of the family, and my sister (age 20) and next oldest female cousin (age 19) were already married. My older male cousin was a single returned missionary. No one invited any of them to hunt eggs, but everyone kept urging me to join the hunt with the kids. I finally explained that I was too old to hunt eggs, given that I was now of legal drinking age. They were confused. “You don’t drink.” Not taking my...

Guest Post: Excerpt from an Easter Sermon

by Liz Johnson (Liz Johnson is the mother of four and resides in Northern Indiana.  She has a BA in International Development and is two postage stamps away from being a certified doula. This post is adapted from an Easter talk she gave in Sacrament meeting.) Whenever I think of Christ being lifted off the cross, His mortal work on the Earth finished, and being prepared for burial and entombment, I can’t help but think of His loyal followers and how they may have felt at the crucifixion of their Lord.  This man – whose life had been prophesied for generations...

Peter, Paul, and Mary

Posted by Zenaida At the recent Exponent retreat, the keynote speaker gave a presentation on the following verses of Paul's epistles: 1 Tim. 2 11 Let the woman learn in asilence with all subjection. 12 But I suffer not a woman to ateach, nor to busurp authority over the man, but to be in csilence. 1 Cor. 11 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the ahead of the bwoman is the man; and the chead of Christ is God. I am not going to try to summarize the entire presentation in this post,...

Easter Sacrament talk

I'll be cheating on my posts for the next little bit having recruited some guest posters who are far more eloquent than I am while I remain sleep deprived with a newborn (born on Monday--a week before his due date, lucky me!).This is the Easter talk my mom, Mary P. Clyde, gave in her ward last Easter. It's always so hard to write "the Easter talk" and come up with something new and original. I like her approach of looking at the Easter story as a story complete with archetypes, character development and all that other good stuff...
What is Exponent II?

Exponent II provides Mormon feminist forums for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum to share their diverse life experiences in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. Through these exchanges, we strive to create a community to better understand and support each other.

Exponent II was founded in 1974 by a group of Mormon women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These women were inspired by the original periodical, “The Woman’s Exponent,” to create a forum “posed on the dual platforms of Mormonism and Feminism.”

For 50+ years, Exponent II has shared women’s voices in its quarterly magazine, and members of the community have convened at an annual retreat. Our reach has expanded as technology has advanced: the blog, founded in January 2006, has reached millions. As we look to the future, we are focused on growth and building a more inclusive community.
