We’re about 6 months in to COVID-restricted church and with Fast Sunday coming up this Sunday, you may be needing a pick-me-up from Zoom Testimony Meeting. Have no fear! We all know the best way to get your spirits up is in good, clean, fun sport. Sports have been looking different this year, but one thing that we love is pitting women against each other!
I have created two brackets of hymns- each hymn written by a female lyricist. One bracket is full of reverent, spiritual songs and the other bracket is full of exuberant, spiritual songs. Which hymn wins out for you? It’s Battle of the Hymns!

My Bracket Winners:
Because I have been given much
Battle Hymn of the Republic
An interesting competition.
In the exuberant bracket, the final match was a very close contest between Master the Tempest is Raging and I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go. Master eeks out the win in the closing seconds.
The reverent bracket was dominated by Where Can I Turn for Peace?, thanks to the major part this hymn played in grieving the stillbirth of a child. If that hymn had forfeited the contest, it would have been a much closer competition between that hymn, Nearer My God to Thee, and Be Still My Soul, with Nearer edging out the others.
A fun exercise, thanks!
Interesting bracketing – I found myself with some match ups I wouldn’t have necessarily expected in the finals.
Reverent finals: Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd against In Humility, Our Savior. Either could take it, depending on the mood of the moment.
Exuberant finals: Did You Think to Pray against They, the Builders of the Nation. I think I’ll hand that one to Did You Think to Pray. Blame my current bias against pioneer worship…
Definitely a more fun way to choose a hymn. When we started home church, I started with hymn 1, the next week, hymn 2, and so on. I have this odd curiousity to find out how far in the hymn book we’ll get before church is back at church.
And it’s Battle Hymn and Be Still My Soul on my brackets. 🙂
Each life that touches ours for good vs where can I turn for peace…. very close game! But I think it comes down to where can I turn for peace as a more all-occasion comfort.
Exuberant goes to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. As He died to make men holy, let us live to make them free.
Tough choices! Top bracket— I do love Nearer My God to Thee. But I am calling a tie between that and I Need Thee Every Hour (kinds the same theme.)
Exuberant goes to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I don’t generally like choosing songs with nationalistic leanings, but this song always makes me want to join in. It’s beautiful and powerful. I wish other countries embraced this song more for it’s beautiful message.
I love this! I agree with R; this is my preferred way to pick a hymn!
Carry On and Because I Have Been Given Much for the win! But there were some tight matches.
