“City Marginalia – A Found Poem”

Read by author

Got pain?
Tire (tire, tire)
Stretching, retching
Not on my watch
Let’s look out for each other
No, you won’t be downhearted forever
You can (you can, you can)
Amazing things are happening here: hope, head, bird nests.
Your tears are only salt meeting with god
Understanding is love’s other name

ARTIST STATEMENT
Found media

Living in a city with so much signage, graffiti, and text feels like being in constant conversation with one’s surroundings. Much of it is noisy or ugly, but it can also be funny, profound, moving, or even poetic. When I see something that speaks to or strikes me, I take a picture.

This piece is formed from various messages spotted everywhere from a Walmart parking lot to the Metropolitan Opera House, bits of text strung together into a poem like beads on a string. I enjoy looking for and capturing such messages, finding meaning in the random or mundane (in some cases literal trash), and the challenge of synthesizing disparate voices into something cohesive and deeply felt. This process has become a sort of walking meditation/active listening practice with my environment, wherever I may be.

Description

Support writers and artists in our community! Subscriptions go toward contributors, community funds, and sustaining the ongoing efforts of Exponent II. Print subscriptions — our most popular and recommended option — continue a quarterly tradition since 1974 and include a free digital subscription.

A single print issue is typically 48 pages and includes 8-10 personal essays, poetry, and our features: Sabbath Pastorals, Women’s Theology, Artist Interviews, and more. We are extremely proud of the art — all by women and gender minorities along the Mormon spectrum — that works in conversation with the essays, and we use a high-quality, no-waste local printer that highlights the beauty of the artwork. The articles are carefully gathered and arranged to create a narrative from beginning to end. This results in a dialogue within every issue as articles speak to one another and spark new ideas and meanings. What does the magazine experience have to offer that’s worth the cost of a subscription? See for yourself by previewing the magazine here.
