Exponent II Publications-2 in less than a month!

We have big things happening at the Exponent II website right now.

Exponent II‘s first book in over 30 years is headed to the printer’s this week. Habits of Being: Mormon Women’s Material Culture, edited by Elizabeth Pinborough, is a collection of essays and poetry in which Mormon women write about objects they have inherited from their ancestresses. Sometimes humorous, sometimes heart-breaking, this collection includes works by Linda Hoffman Kimball, Jana Riess, Margaret Toscano, and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. Copies will be shipped at the beginning of May, just in time for Mother’s Day.

The Spring 2012 issue of Exponent II focuses on the stories of Mormons across the spectrum of belief who are members and friends of the LGBTQ community. With essays about coming out, leaving the Church, staying in the Church, and learning to love one another, this issue is sure to sell out quickly.

Treat yourself to a subscription or just order this issue. The Spring 2012 LGBTQ issue of Exponent II will be mailed on April 15th, 2012.

I just bought the “Habits of Being” book and can’t wait to read it. Hopefully it will come quickly enough that I can skim it to see if it would work for my mom for Mother’s Day. I don’t mind giving her something a little feminist, but she’s very conventional in her Mormonness so I don’t want to give her anything that goes too far. Can anyone comment on how “feminist” the book is and whether you think it would appeal to a pretty traditional Mormon mom?

Amy, I think the beauty of HoB is that it should work for any Mormon woman. I think there’s one or two stories that might be considered feminist, but they’re told in the Exponent style of sharing one’s experience, not trying to preach. Hope that helps clarify.

  I have two little girls and if aihytnng, this has really helped awaken my inner feminist! I am more aware than ever about what is being taught at church and how and I am careful to take the time and talk about things with my eldest (who is only 4) especially about the messages she recieves from primary. For example, she asked how the world was created so we sat down with some pictures and the Bible and I told her the story of the creation- except I also taught her that her Heavenly Mother was there helping to create our world also (because I just can’t believe She wasn’t involved!). I want her to know that its ok to think about and have a relationship with her Heaveny Mother and she’s just not going to get that at church. I hope that we can be open with each other as she continues to grow up.
