My Jams

thunderbitch-620   A lot of things lately have made me feel powerless: difficult changes in my Singles Branch, the whole political situation, some pretty major reminders that patriarchy is alive and well, choices some of my loved ones are making, challenges in my professional life. Then, a few days ago, I heard this song that I used to love. I was just sitting and working when it came up on a playlist I was listening to. It didn’t change anything, but I felt like taking on the world as I listened. It reminded me that I AM powerful. I was forgetting all the things I do have control over. I immediately started trying to other songs that made me feel that way. So here, for your listening empowerment, are some of my favorite pump-up songs:

Leather Jacket – Thunderb***h: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRTWenElxJ8

(Language warning, there is an F bomb in here…but just a little one.) This song is especially appropriate for fall. Listen to it as you strut around the grocery store wearing your fiercest leather jacket and tell me it doesn’t feel good.

Glory – Common & John Legend

10-Cent Pistol – The Black Keys

Get Up Offa That Thing – James Brown

And last, but not least:

You Don’t Own Me – Leslie Gore

Could this song be any more appropriate given the recent Donald Trump tape debacle?

Sometimes I find that the emphasis on reverence in our church gets to be too much for me. I’m all for being respectful and reverent of things that should be revered. Sometimes, though, you need to feel power, too. Sometimes we need a bit of musical courage. And sometimes you just need to strut around the grocery store feeling awesome.

What songs are on your power list?
